my wonder years

I'm very happy that finally, episodes of the Wonder Years are available for viewing. Unfortunately not on DVD or Blu Ray so I can purchase them, but on Amazon's streaming video portion of their web site. That's nearly as good, especially since I can stream them to the television via a Roku box.

So that's what I've been doing the past few nights, watching episodes of that show. I started at the very beginning and have been going in order.

That's one of my all-time favorite shows. I guess because Kevin Arnold's age and the time span mirrors my own school time. Well, almost. The show isn't quite accurate when it comes to placing music with the year - they use some songs that hadn't been released yet.

Some of the predicaments in which he finds himself also mirror my own experience - like the episode in which he keeps picking up the phone to call this girl in his class but then he keeps putting it down. Unlike me, however, he finally does call her instead of deferring it to endless tomorrows.

Now compare growing up like Kevin, Paul and Winnie, versus growing up in the environment of Malcolm in the Middle. I never watched the latter series when it was on prime time; I've seen several of the reruns and just recently I purchased the first season on DVD. The first episode was outrageous, and today I was trying to imagine what if the Wonder Years had started off like that.

Anyway I am very happy that I can sit back and enjoy the Wonder Years again.
