I haven't written much since it has been so busy lately, and today will be brief.

I was thinking about my office and about the workplace in general - are people in the positions they currently occupy due to their own merits - i.e., they have earned it - or because of something that has nothing to do with their competency, such as being a family member or knowing someone in the company or having just fallen into the position.

I wonder what percentage of people fall into each category, and whether this percentage changes as you move upwards in the organization.

Then the other thing to ponder is to look at our own selves and decide which category we are in, and how do we feel about that.
