Summer Sun

Did I already use this title before? I don't remember.. well, that was so long ago it doesn't matter anyway.

My good friend J sent me a link to a blog that she said brought back lots of memories so naturally I had to check it out.

The blog is called Summer Sun: the Los Angeles Asian American Dance Scene. Here's the blog description from the site:

This blog is devoted to your stories and recollections on the Asian American dance scene in Los Angeles at places like Rodger Young's and the Elks Club, listening to the bands Carry On, Free Flight and Winfield Summit. Collecting the stories is important because it was “our” time as Asian Americans. The decade of the 1970s was a period in the awakening of Asian pride following the Civil Rights movement, and minority groups were instilled with self-esteem in ethnic identity.

Now for someone like me (and perhaps some or many of you out there), how could this blog NOT be interesting? Those were some great times..

Hey, happy Friday to you all - too bad there's no dances going on this weekend, haha.. or did anyone check out Blarney's or Rodger Young to be sure about that?

I miss Paul's Kitchen for that music. I took it for granted, didn't go too often. Only ate there once; the place, decor and the food was old school Cantonese. Now that the restaurant closed up, I miss the hangout where 'Summer Sun' could be heard now and then.

It's now a pet store.

It's a pet store now? Oh my. I go past there every once in a while but hadn't noticed what it became. The food was actually pretty bad! (sorry if any ex-Paul's Kitchen folks are reading this, but it was..)

Dirty Paul's closed? Oh, no. How are we going to get our MDR of grease?

Wait a second. Are you guys talking about the place on Jeff? Whew, did you ever park around the back and get a whiff of the smell? Personally I never ate there.

The place on San Pedro is open until 8. You don't want to be there much after dark. Chow mein still slides right down. I would Yelp it 2 stars.

Yes Paul's in Monterey Park closed and the pet shop that used to be down the street moved into the building. The one of Jefferson closed long time ago, didn't it? I think I only went there one time and don't remember anything about it. Now the one on San Pedro - we took out some food for lunch there in 2008 sometime and I have to say, it was probably the worst Chinese food (or any type of food) I've ever eaten in my life! It was absolutely horrible. I sat there and wondered if this was the same stuff I used to love and gobble up when I was little and my tastes have changed, or if the food had changed. Not sure which one..
