NBC

Tonight we celebrated Julie's brother's birthday at NBC restaurant in Monterey Park. That's my favorite Chinese place in the SGV (along with Panda Express). I think it is kind of funny that there are so many Chinese restaurants with three-letter names like NBC, or CBS, or ABC. I haven't seen FOX yet but I bet it is out there somewhere.

Tonight's dinner was only so-so, however, because the selection of dishes wasn't what I would have picked myself. But then it wasn't my birthday. Here's some pictures:

This dish seems like a complete waste of time to me. I call it "scrawny chicken" although "bony chicken" could be the alternate name. It's cold, the skin is slimy and cold, and look at all the bones. The way it is just cut into random pieces always mystifies me. It's even worse when it is yellow. Anyway, I didn't eat any of it.

I didn't eat any of this dish either, which turned out to be like Chinese menudo. Enough said..

This fish dish was okay but it isn't something I would order on my own.

Scallops with cashews was pretty good. Now this is something I might get if it was up to me.

This is something I did get. We all picked one thing and this was my pick.

Finally, here are shortribs. This one had a tasty sauce but the beef had the typical texture you encounter in a Chinese restaurant, like they use tenderizer on it.

And here is a picture of the cake, which we brought in. Looks like the birthday boy is named Geibat, doesn't it? Well, it came from a Chinese bakery so I guess they don't handle the writing that well. It should be "Gilbert."

My comments don't sound too enthusiastic so why do I say NBC is my fave Chinese place in the SGV? It depends on what dishes you get - most of the ones tonight just weren't my favorites. Of course, you're hearing from someone who was brought up on chop suey, chow mein and fried rice so you have to take that into account as well. That's not to say NBC is that type of restaurant, because it isn't. But from sampling the same dishes there versus many other places I've tried in the SGV, they do it the best and on top of that, they also have good service.

The chicken looks boiled and undercooked. Not appetizing at all.
The cake had me rolling! That's the way Gilbert sounds in "chinglish."
You should send that pic to http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/

BTW Happy 4th of July!

That's some nasty chicken, especially with the cold, slimy skin and the red stuff all over the place!! Plus most of the pieces there is literally nothing but skin and bones! As for the cake.. Julie ordered it in person the day before and even spelled the name out on a piece of paper for them, but oh well.. lol.

Happy 4th to you, too!
